How will learning about the library and information sources help me?
.
Student using library resources As a student at Delaware Technical & Community College, you will be required to research topics for papers, reports, oral presentations, etc. You may be asked by your instructors to become familiar with representative journals, magazines, and books in the field in which you are majoring. Often, you will be asked to gather information from authoritative Web sites. Understanding and learning to use appropriate information from many different sources is typically required in college-level work.

The ability to recognize when information is needed and to be able to locate, evaluate and use that information is important to your success at the college. Some of your assignments and coursework will give you the opportunity to learn how to frame research questions, access information from a variety of sources and evaluate the information you find. You can then use that information for a specific purpose, such as a paper or report. Information gathering also involves learning how to avoid plagiarism by properly citing and documenting sources.

The library provides many information-finding tools as well as helpful guides. One tool is the online library catalog, Delaware Library Catalog, which lists the books and periodical holdings of the four Delaware Tech campus libraries, along with materials from other Delaware libraries. In addition, the library provides many online databases, which list articles from journals and magazines on various subjects. Many of the articles are provided full-text within the database. Easy access to Web search engines, pre-selected Web sites, pathfinders about college-related topics, and the catalogs of other Delaware libraries is accessible through the Library Services home page. The Delaware Tech librarians are available to assist you in using any of these services and tools.

We live in a world that is in constant change. The job of today may be obsolete tomorrow. Your success in each new venture will rely on your ability to learn new skills quickly and successfully. As a student of Delaware Tech, you will learn the information skills necessary to become a lifelong learner, as well as how to apply those skills in both your career choices and personal life.
